Silver Leaf, Silver Feather, Magarza Plateada flowers by Parador de Tejeda |
A few days ago, still in the first half of June 2025, I went for a short walk between Cruz de Tejeda and Artenara. On getting off the bus at Cruz de Tejeda, I always take a pic or two of the Caldera de Tejeda and generally look around. I must have a few hundred, if not thousands, pics taken from this spot.
This time, looking to my right, towards the cliffs of Los Moriscos, I've noticed a few white patches on the slopes and the sight filled my heart with joy.
The thing is, a few years ago this very sight was something I was confidently expecting at this time of the year. Those white round bushes are silver leaf plants in their full splendor. They were absolute joy to look at, and I was very saddened to find that the big forest fire of 2019 took pretty much all the mature plants, and only mature plants give this beautiful display. The young ones can produce a flowering spike or two, not this exuberance.
And now, nearly six years later, they are definitely back! Looks like the younger plants have matured at last and are in full bloom. I was also told there are some plants flowering in places where they weren't found before.
Maybe some plants matured to appear in previous years, but I am reasonably confident this is the first year after the fire they are out in force.
There is even a certain improvement in the positioning, at least along the route I took. Where they used to be right next to the path, now they are quite a bit lower and on a sharp slope. So there is no danger of them being trampled accidentally and considerably less danger of being picked.
