Birchanger Wood

Went to Birchanger Wood today,  in search of alternative place to see bluebells. Small forest next to Littlebury is very beautiful, but private, you can't enter there and have to look over gates and fences.

Birchhanger wood proved to be quite good. Not as pretty-pretty as the one at Littlebury, with a lot of signs of recent clearing, footpath making etc, so not so idyllic. But - you can quite legally walk there, which is a big thing in itself. There were more flowers visible out, too - primulas and wood anemones. I don't know if there are any in Littlebury, or course, since I've never been inside.  The bluebells not really form a carpet, but there's quite a lot of them. The best part of the forest - with flowers, no brambles and still light foliage (beeches, I think) - is to your right along the footpath, not far from where you enter the wood by water tower (their website has a pdf map of the circular walk).

Speaking of wood anemones. Last year I went to Norway to see them blooming. I didn't know there are large drifts of them in twenty minutes driving distance.  They are nearly finished there by now, many flowers loosing petals, but still.

Well, I'd have gone anyway :)
